Cold War Russian arcade games

Soviet-Era Arcade Games Crawl Out of Their Cold War Graves:

From the late ’70s to the early ’90s, Soviet military factories produced some 70 different video game models. Based largely (and crudely) on early Japanese designs, the games were distributed — in the words of one military manual — for the purposes of “entertainment and active leisure, as well as the development of visual-estimation abilities.”

Some people need help (Sickest Super Mario Bros level ever?)

Mario for Sadomasochists
What would make the video even better is if it had the audio of the person playing it. I would love to hear his/her comments, especially when trying to do the jumps and hitting hidden blocks.

NES 12-game Kiosk on Ebay

eBay: Nintendo NES in-store 12-game KIOSK display RARE Promo (item 230114350156 end time Apr-13-07 18:00:00 PDT):

We’re selling an original Nintendo Entertainment System NES in-store display 12-game console! That’s right, it plays 12 Nintendo games in one unit and they’re interchangable with regular NES games! Just open the front panel and plug in your favorite cartridges, press the select button on the front panel, and switch between 12 different titles without worrying about blowing on the contacts or having the game pop out of the spring-loaded NES! These plug in and stay in place like Genesis and Atari games.

This was NEVER sold in store or available for consumer purchase! It was only used in retail stores to show off Nintendo games back in the 1980’s! Now this piece of gaming history can be the crown jewel of your collection! It’s an authentic Nintendo product, unit #18428. It features five controller ports (controllers not included) that accept standard NES controllers. The unit is grey METAL, with a black plastic controller rest. The color scheme matches the original grey/black/red NES & Famicom colors. The front panel has a red L.E.D. readout to display the cartridge number currently in play and includes a special Nintendo hex key to open the front panel to insert your games.

It looks pretty sweet, but the bids are already up to $698…

Wil Wheaton and his mastery of the NES

Wil Wheaton’s Geek in Review: 8 Bits High and Rising:

The game began, and I was blown away. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen on a console. It made our Atari 2600 feel as technologically advanced as a set of alphabet blocks, and its recreation of the arcade game I loved was even more faithful than the Colecovision version of Donkey Kong I’d declared “the most radical game ever!” when I played it at a friend’s house five or six years earlier.

And so Wil tells a great story of perseverance and triumph over distractions to win a complete NES setup in 1986.

Keepin’ it real fake, part XLVIII: Slim PS2 plays NES games? Sign us up! - Engadget:

Forget that Virtual Console hullabaloo over in Wii land, here’s a slim PS2 that comes prepped with a nice little collection of NES games right out of the box — zero Wii Points required! That’s right, the New Slim 2 does it up 14-in-1 style, with classics like Super Mario, Galaxian and Duck Hunt.

It appears that it’s just another NOAC in the shape of a PS2… Yawn.

Commodore 64 laptop

MAKE: Blog: Teeny Tiny Commodore 64:

Here are a few pics of my own DTV Hummer project. I had an old PSOne LCD screen lying around and I thought I’d make a C64 laptop. Actually, it’s more like a C64 PDA! It measures 6.5 x 6 x 1.5 inches (15.5 x 16.5 x 4 cm) when closed.

Here’s hoping that the next Atari Flashback will be based on the Atari 8-bit computers so we can have easy access to a small Atari 8-bit computer. That way us mortals (as compared to Ben Heckendorn) have a chance at our own Atari 8-bit laptop.

Using old TV ads for a brief history of game consoles

PC World - A Brief History of Game Consoles, as Seen in Old TV Ads:

The first piece of tech gear that I could call my own wasn’t a computer; it was a game console–an original Sega Master System. I remember it, and the often-cheesy marketing that so appealed to my eight-year-old-self, as fondly as I do my first kiss (sorry Kathryn from fourth grade). So, inspired by our recent look at old computer ads and the launch of the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3, I’ve compiled a list of classic console commercials spanning three decades.

I don’t think younger generation really appreciates what it was like to play video games for the first time. I remember the hours spent playing one of the pong knock offs. It was the strangest feeling to be able to control some dots on the TV screen.
